An egress window is a large window that provides an exit in case of an emergency, such as a fire. Our windows will meet IRC requirements for a safe means of egress, with a minimum net net clear opening of 5.7 square feet (0.530 m2). Click here to learn about technical requirements.
We manage the submission of all permit forms for you, so there's no need to worry about the paperwork. Once you sign the proposal, we promptly begin submitting the necessary forms to the township for approval. Your only responsibility is the permit fee determined by the township. The approval process usually takes between 2 to 4 weeks, with fees ranging from $90 to $300, and an average cost of $180. We will notify you once the permits are approved, offering you the choice to pay the town directly or have us handle the payment and invoice you.
In some instances, the construction department may require plot plans or surveys along with the permits. These documents are often included in the closing documents from the home purchase.
Occasionally, town officials may request engineering plans. If this occurs, our engineer can prepare the necessary plans for a fee of $300.
After the work is completed our office will coordinate the inspection with you and the town in order to close the permit. You'll get a call from us the day following your installation to find out what days and times work best for you.
Typical installation is one to two days, depending on the number of windows and site conditions. Read about the installation process here.
The cost of an egress window project typically ranges from $6,500 to $7,500 for an unfinished basement and $7,500 to $8,500 for a finished basement. This price includes permit preparation, excavation, the window itself, window wells and accessories, and installation. Prices may vary depending on site conditions, window size and location, and finishes.
Your proposal will provide a detailed description of what is included and note any exclusions, giving you the full project cost upfront. There are no hidden fees or additional charges on the installation day. The only extra costs are the township-set permit fee (averaging $180) and any required engineering plans ($300 if needed).
We are equipped to work in most kinds of weather, including rain and snow. Storms or other dangerous weather conditions could cause the installation date to be moved. If this is the case you will be notified, usually by 5 pm the day prior to installation.
